If you are reading this review then I assume you are at least a little familiar with NECA’s line of ultra-detailed action figures based on the “Gears of War” (GoW) properties by Epic Games and Microsoft Game Studios. With that said, each successive wave of figures gets better and better; and the Boomer is no exception. This Locust behemoth comes from series five along with what many consider to be the best wave of GoW figures to date. One discrepancy that is obvious from the moment you see the Boomer is his size in comparison to the other figures in the line. Yes, the Boomer is smaller than he technically should be, especially when compared to his massive size in the actual videogames. NECA has already addressed this concern with their fans by explaining why they had to make the Boomer “slightly” smaller in order to keep production costs down which, in turn, ultimately decided whether we even got a Boomer in plastic form at all. If you ask me, I’ll take a smaller-scale Boomer over no Boomer at all any day.
Getting past the ‘size’ ordeal will reveal a figure whose details are astounding! This figure features exceptional articulation given his bulky size and more sculpted details than you can ever notice with one pass. I’ve said this before, but NECA’s attention to detail is what separates them from other toy/collectible companies and keeps them as a company who is always setting a new standard for others to follow. You know you have a quality piece of merchandise in your hands once you feel the heft of the Boomer and see the game-accurate sculpt in three dimensions!
The paint apps are 100% perfect. I have never seen a (mass-market) figure whose paint looks this good, not even on the other GoW figures. No slop, no bleed, and no runs can be seen anywhere on this big guy. Even the coloring is accurate down to the gnarly yellow teeth and deep sunken red eyes. The paint on this figure is beautiful. It wasn’t by sheer luck that I ended up with awesome paint apps either, because I have three of these figures and the paint is this good on all three. Also note that the weathering on his armor and weapon, as well as the shading on his skin is picture perfect.
Speaking of his weapon, the Boomer comes with only one accessory: the Boomshot! I can’t write enough good things about this weapon. It’s the first time we’ve been given the Boomshot in this toy line, and the scale and uber-crazy detail work on it is simply astounding! It has to be seen to be believed. If you were looking to fortify your Cog/Locust army or just give Augustus Cole a suitable weapon, look no further than the Boomshot. Really, it almost takes center stage with this figure, it looks that good.
As you can tell I am pretty excited about this figure, and you should be too. Once you get your hands on him he will quickly become one of your favorite Locust soldiers. Also keep in mind that NECA now has a basic-body template to start adding variations on the Boomer model such as the “Grinder,” the “Butcher,” and the “Mauler!” Which also means new never before seen weapons like the flail, boomshield, and -gasp- the mulcher!! If you haven’t picked up any of the Gears of War figures from NECA, then now would be a good time to start. Things are looking good for this line of figures, and if you are a fan of the game then you owe it to yourself to track this guy down. The Boomer is a must for all Gear-Heads and he is worth every penny!

The GOW figures are sturdy and very detailed, but not much fun for the kids to play with. I helped my boys create a GOW action scene with them instead. This was a nice addition to our GOW diorama. I only wish it was larger.
